August 24, 2010 - Know Your Health!

Most people know they should have regular check ups for numerous health concerns including breast, colon, and skin screenings but did you know there are other tests that can identify hidden problems you might have and help improve the quality of your life?

Hormone, Allergy, Toxicity, GI, and Vitamin Deficiency tests are all beneficial in knowing your overall health. These blood, urine, and saliva tests can be done at your local compounding pharmacy where appropriate medications can be constructed to help you live your best, healthiest life.

  •    Hormone Screenings - Female Hormone Screening provides measurements of two key hormones for women, estrogen levels and levels of FSH. Monitoring these critical hormone levels are important if you are a woman who has concerns about your menstrual cycles,  infertility, or symptoms of menopause.

  •    Allergy Testing - Allergy testing involves having a skin or blood test to find out what substance, or allergen, may trigger an allergic response in a person. n

  •    Toxicity Screenings - There are several testing options that help you identify the amount of toxicity your body has been exposed to. Exposure to toxins can have physiological effects resulting in impaired metabolism and cellular function, as well as cause nervous system problems.

  •    GI Screenings - Gastrointestinal function is important for general health. The intestinal tract contains significant amounts of bacteria; some beneficial, some neutral, and some harmful. Balancing beneficial microbial flora in the gut is key to proper digestion, efficient nutrient usage, and ridding the body of waste and pathogens. Poor digestion and malabsorption can lead to immune dysfunction, nutritional insufficiencies, mental/emotional disorders, and autoimmune diseases.

  •    Vitamin Deficiency - Vitamin and mineral testing are used to assess the level of nutrients in an individual’s blood, urine and hair so that healthcare professionals can more accurately diagnose deficiency diseases or overdoses and devise an effective therapy in response.

May 12, 2010 - In 1981, the world of compounding as we knew it changed forever. That was the year that PCCA, Professional Compounding Centers of America, was founded. PCCA was the beacon of light that took compounding out of the “dark ages” into, what we know today, as the true art and science of creating individualized preparations to meet the unique needs in today’s world.

1981 was also the year that VCP became part of PCCA, which, in essence, changed our direction forever. Being part of PCCA not only provided us with the valid science of preparing medication, it also gave us the vision of what might be possible in terms of helping people who were beyond the help of patented pharmaceuticals.

What started as a few good scientifically valid preparations in the 1980’s, has turned into an industry whose growth shows no limits. It seems that for every disease state, a compounded preparation may be needed to augment the therapy, which puts pressure on our industry to become more and more main stream on how we do things.

Because of this pressure, an accreditation process for compounding, PCAB, has been created. The Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board, founded by eight different associations and boards in pharmacy, is now becoming the standard of care in compounding. To understand more about this new standard of care, please go to www.PCAB.org.

The American Medical Association, AMA, and the American Association of Equine Practioners, AAEP, have formerly endorsed PCAB and the pharmacies that are now PCAB Accredited.

Although we have come a long way from our beginnings in 1981, the one thing that has not and will not change is our commitment to individualized care. We continue to work within the triad; Physician-Patient-Pharmacy relationship. As long as we keep this at the forefront of our business, the science and all of its processes will take care of itself.

April 23, 2010 - What are the Seven Things You Need to Know About Compounding Pharmacies?

1. What is a Compounding Pharmacy?
Compounding Pharmacy (also referred to as compounding and pharmaceutical compounding) is a particular type of pharmacy that specializes in preparing a specific drug product in order to fill a patient’s unique prescription.

2. Compounding has history.
The art of compounding has been around in America since the early 1800’s. Long before manufacturing and the FDA, compounding was the only source of medicine. In 1940 it was estimated that 50% of all Rx’s were compounds.

3. What do customers get from a compounding pharmacy?
Millions of Americans have healthcare needs that can’t be filled at the regular pharmacy but instead require customized solutions, mixed safely by a trained, licensed pharmacist.

4. Compounding Pharmacies are an extension of your medical team.
Compounding Pharmacists work with physicians, nurse practitioners and veterinarians to create customized medication solutions for patients and animals whose health care needs are not met by manufactured medications.

5. Physicians often prescribe compounding medication for patients that:
-Require specialized dosages. (infants or the elderly)
-Are undergoing bio-identical hormone replacement therapy
-Need allergen free medication
-Are Children who require flavored medications
-Have difficulty absorbing the medication using traditional delivery methods

6. What other areas do compounding pharmacies specialize in?
Veterinary, Urology, Gastrology, Dermatology, Cosmetic Surgery, Pediatric, Pain Management, and more.

7. What does PCAB accredited mean?
While all compounding pharmacies are required to meet the requirements set by their respective state boards of pharmacy, PCAB Accredited TM denotes a more stringent and comprehensive standard, which serve as an assurance that the Accredited Pharmacy has been tested against the profession’s most rigorous standards.
